“Christine Bunting, head of Special Collections at McHenry, said that while having a rock ‘n’ roll archive at a University library is “unusual,” UCSC is truly seizing the opportunity to make the archive an accessible, educational experience. “We’re really thrilled to have this material here,” Bunting said. “We feel there’s a really scholarly side to the Grateful Dead and are [integral] to the studies of the ’60s, popular culture, and the vernacular of American music.” In order to make the archive accessible on a large scale, there will be a website launch sometime this summer that will provide “remote access to thousands and thousands of images,” Bunting said. There will also be a social networking aspect of the website where Deadheads can share their “Dead experience” through images and stories.” — Deadheads get a sneak peek of UCSC Grateful Dead Archive - Santa Cruz Sentinel
